Barcelona have decided to stay at their Nou Camp stadium after announcing a €600 million redevelopment, which will increase its capacity to 105,000 and include a roof to cover the spectator areas, but not the pitch.
The club’s directors voted against a proposal to move from the 99,354-seater ground to a new location at an extraordinary meeting held on Monday, the option of building a new stadium on a new site being dismissed as the final cost could have saddled the club and its members with debt and tied the hands of future boards of directors..
The remodelling plan will now go to Barcelona’s 160,000 members, who collectively actually own the club, ahead of a referendum in April.
If approved by the members, the redevelopment would begin in May 2017 and be completed in February 2021.
