A Swiss woman, sought by the Swiss authorities for taking her ten-month-old baby out of the country illegally, was located and arrested in Torrevieja, Alicante, on Tuesday and, after being transferred to hospital, killed the child and then tried to commit suicide.
Forty-year-old Katharina Katit-Stõheli, a Swiss national, was being sought after she took her son, Dylan Katit, who was under medical supervision in Zurich. The Swiss authorities believed she could have left the country and issued an international alert.
She was located in a shopping centre in Torrevieja and was taken into custody as the child was in need of medical care. She was taken to hospital where, whilst in Guardia Civil custody, she used a knife to cut the baby’s throat and then tried to kill herself. She is in a serious condition.
It is not yet known how the woman came to be in possession of a knife whilst in custody.
