The environmental group Mesa de la Ria has reported a spillage of 100,000 cubic metres of industrial waste into the rio Tinto, the spill coming from an abandoned chemical reservoir from the 1990’s.
The Junta de Andalucia is said to be studying the complaint. The waste apparently comes from the copper smelter belonging to Atlantic Copper who, following a conviction, stopped using the deposits in 2000.
According to Mesa de la Ria there was a similar spillage in 2007. Mesa de la Ria suspect the latest spillage to have been caused by intentional damage to pipes and they have stated that they want the Ministry of if they do not get a suitable response from the Junta de Andalucia they will take the matter to the European Union.
So it’s probably going to the European Union then.
