The Mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, has announced that the restoration of the eighteenth century Pósito (Granary) building will begin in March, adding that it is one of the projects most demanded by residents of the town.
The contract, worth over two million euros, has been awarded to the company Constructora San José and the scheduled completion period is currently 18 months.
The Pósito, located in plaza de la Constitución, was built in the eighteenth century and during the nineteenth century housed shops and homes. It was acquired by the city in 2002. The deterioration of the building is such that it is underpinned to prevent its collapse.
The building covers 1,039 square metres, with a basement, ground and first floor. The Council does not yet have a definitive use planned for the building, although possibilities being put forward include a new home for the Maria Zambrano Foundation and/or the municipal archives.
