Nerja Council is making a habit of winning court cases against the Junta de Andalucia in recent times, the political repercussions of which are always unpredictable but seemingly inevitable.
The recent case, heard by the Málaga Social Court Number 10, related to a lawsuit filed by the Directorate General of Labour Relations of the Junta de Andalucía after Nerja Council introduced an employment programme designed to prevent social exclusion.
The programme, financed through €566,000 of municipal funds, provided work in landscaping, cleaning and other positions for 117 people considered in danger of social exclusion. The Junta de Andalucia subsequently launched a similar programme and took the Nerja Council to court.
At the time, IU and PSOE councillors stated that the Nerja Council would lose the case and even requested the resignation of the Councillor for Employment. Following the decision of the Málaga Social Court, the Mayor of Nerja has suggested that the relevant members should act with consistency and, as a result, offer their own resignations.
