Police have evicted a total of seven people from their cave homes in Cerro de San Miguel, the action being taken due to the potentially unsafe conditions, according to the authorities.
Although these caves, located in the municipality of Sacromonte, Granada, have been inhabited by many people, they are considered neither houses in the usual sense, with kitchen and bathroom, nor traditional cave houses. They are viewed by the authorities as artificial holes.
Following the evictions, the holes were filled in and boarded up. One person was arrested during the eviction, allegedly for assaulting a police officer, and two others were taken away for identification as they lacked documentation.
