Vélez-Málaga Council has unveiled plans for a new wholesale market to be located near the Camino de Remanente area in the north of the town.
The new market will cover an area of 25,000 square metres, 14,000 square metres of which will be buildings, and is set to cost €6 million. The Council is expecting private enterprise to fund the project.
An advantage of the location is that it will stop heavy lorries having to drive through the centre of the town.
The Mayor described the design of the market as modern, functional and with distinctive architecture, calling it ‘innovative and sustainable’. It will have, amongst other things, piers for loading and unloading, packaging areas, waste management, pest control laboratory and teaching and training areas.
However, no start date has yet been specified.
