A 31-year-old Pakistani entrepreneur in Girona has been arrested after allegedly cutting off two of his fingers in order to make a €100,000 insurance claim.
On February 8th, a child playing in a park found two human fingers, a carving knife and a cutting board covered in blood and police began an investigation, initially suspecting a settling of accounts as the bits were found near a health centre.
However, fingerprints led police to a Pakistani entrepreneur who was trying to claim on an insurance policy. It was discovered that the victim had taken out six insurance policies since late 2013, and that he had already started the necessary process to receive compensation for his alleged accident.
The total of his potential claims was around €122,000. It also emerged that this same man collected €24,000 in 2013 from two insurance companies for supposedly losing two fingers on his right hand. However, his right hand was fully intact and it had therefore been a scam.
The severed fingers were too badly deteriorated to be reattached. After his arrest, the man was released pending trial.
