The Mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, has announced that a special campaign on speed control carried out in conjunction with the DGT on April 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th resulted in 161 drivers being detected at speeds above the prescribed limit.
The campaign was carried out on Avenida Juan Carlos I in Vélez and in Avenida Andalucía in Torre del Mar, with a total of 3,598 vehicles controlled. The 161 violations were therefore a mere 4.47% of the total.
The Mayor pointed out that this campaign was not a tax collection exercise but related to the safety of motorists and pedestrians and was a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of excessive speed.
The Mayor added that only drivers exceeding 70 kph in the 50 kph zones were penalised and that criticism and social alarm caused by the four-day campaign was unjustified and was perhaps orchestrated for electoral reasons.
