A group of researchers have located a Civil War mass grave in the mountain village of El Madroño in Sevilla province, so far identifying the remains of 29 people shot by the Franco forces.
It is thought that the grave, measuring two metres wide by eleven metres long, contains around 60 bodies in total. The researchers noted that the way the remains are laid out, the bodies were probably just thrown in the pit after being shot.
All sorts of personal items have been found in the grave, such as buttons, wallets, lighters, belts and boots.
The town, population 350 people, erected a monument in the town some twenty years ago in honour of those who ‘gave their lives for freedom’.
