A new ruling by ADEAC, the organisation responsible for the awarding of the prestigious ‘Blue Flags’, means that none of the beaches in Nerja are eligible for consideration this year.
In previous years, compliance with Directive 91/271/CEE on Urban Waste Water Treatment was recommendatory, but this year it is obligatory. Nerja, without any form of sewage treatment at this moment in time, therefore has no chance of securing a ‘Blue Flag’.
Work has finally started on the sewage treatment plant for Nerja, after nearly forty years of delays, but it is unlikely to be in operation for another couple of years even if all goes to plan and there are no problems, administrative or technical.
