A woman of sub-Saharan origin gave birth on Tuesday on the Maritime Rescue vessel Guardamar Caliope, just minutes after being rescued from a boat in which she was travelling with another 51 migrants.
The boat, with 33 men, 14 women and 5 children, was intercepted in the Alborán Sea as it made its way to mainland Spain. It was spotted by a helicopter from a French warship which then notified the Spanish authorities.
Officers on the Maritime Rescue vessel assisted with the birth of the child until a navy doctor arrived on the scene. The mother and newborn are said to be in good health.
