Prison without bail for vagrant who killed police officer in Málaga

A judge in Málaga has ordered detention in custody without bail for the German vagrant arrested for killing National Police officer Francisco Diaz last Wednesday.

Stefan Reinert, aged 37 years, is in a prison module at the Hospital Clinico where he is recovering from wounds suffered during his confrontation with the police.  After refusing to make a statement, the prosecution requested his detention in custody.

Reinert, a homeless German national, has a criminal record of over thirty offences including maltreatment, violence against police officers, robbery with violence, burglary, resisting arrest and disobedience. He was known to have psychiatric problems and was considered dangerous.

A 30-year-old bystander who was injured by a stray bullet during the incident last Wednesday has now been discharged from the Regional Hospital in Málaga.
