Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, the leader of the main opposition group in Congress, and his team have decided to step down in the wake of the Socialist Party’s (PSOE) poor showing at Sunday’s European elections.
Rubalcaba has called an extraordinary party meeting for July 19th and 20th, the main order of the day to be choosing a new general secretary, given Rubalcaba’s decision to abandon ship.
Rubalcaba described Sunday’s election results as ‘bad’, the PSOE taking just 14 seats with a mere 23.03 percent of the vote. The Popular Party (PP), which claimed ‘victory’, took just 16 seats with 26.04 percent of the votes cast at a poll that saw the two main parties secure their worst results in democratic history, losing five million votes between them.
