Lorena Herrera is a wife and a mother of three children and suffers from an inoperable brain tumour. She requires treatment costing €3,000 for every ten sessions.
Lacking the financial resources, the family distributed 200 collection pots around Vélez-Málaga to try and raise funds and the community rallied round in solidarity.
Then, a few days ago, 12 of the collection pots were stolen from various establishments in the town. Video surveillance footage from the shops revealed two familiar faces. The alleged perpetrators were two women who, earlier in the week, had been arrested for numerous thefts in hairdressers shops.
The two women were released and it would seem that they immediately went out and began stealing the collection pots. They were once again arrested…and once again released. Although an exact figure is unknown, it is thought that the collection pots could have contained up to €3,000.
The two alleged thieves are residents of Málaga and the establishments targeted were on the route from the Courthouse to the bus stop where they would have caught the bus home.
Fortunately, despite the thefts, the family has raised enough money to begin the treatment for Lorena Herrera.
