A number of families, 152 in total, feel that they have been cheated by Granada Council for VPO (subsidised) housing units which were supposed to have been completed in 2011 but have yet to be started.
Some of the families have paid as much as €30,000 and now find themselves with no home and no job.
The municipal company Emuvyssa ceded the land to promoters on three occasions, but none were able to get financing to build the 125 family units. The families were forced, they claim, to form a cooperative if they ever wanted to see their money again.
Emuvyssa them put the promotion in the hands of the cooperative which now faces a fine of €120,000 from the Council. The cooperative no longer sees their struggle as a fight for their homes, but merely one to get their hard-earned money back.
