Spain were on the end of a hammering in their first match in the World Cup 2014, the reigning champions losing 5-1 to Holland.
Spain took the lead through a dubious penalty decision, not the first in the tournament and undoubtedly not the last, with Alonso converting the spot kick.
Holland, fortunately not quite as cynical and savage as four years ago, although still a very ‘physical’ side, looked far sharper in front of goal and equalised just before half time with a superb headed goal from Van Persie.
In the second half, van Persie grabbed his second, Robben added two more and de Vrij made it five for Holland.
