The strawberry season in Huelva has just finished and farmers in the province are describing it as one of the worst they can remember.
According to Freshuelva, who represent ninety percent of the farmers, the yield this season was 280,000 tons, very similar to the figure for last year. However, sales have fallen by 11% and stand at €282 million.
High temperatures throughout Europe have led to overproduction and the market has been saturated, leading to plummeting prices. Many farmers are having to ask banks to refinance loans taken out for the season and are also asking the Government for a moratorium on Social Security payments for the months of May and June.
