Seven people required treatment for smoke inhalation following a fire in the early hours of Monday morning at a block of flats in Torrox Costa.
The fire began at 04:30 in the kitchen of an apartment in block 78 of Centro Internacional in Torrox-Costa and quickly spread to the rest of the apartment, producing thick smoke.
Around one hundred people had to be evacuated from the building while the Fire Brigade, Guardia Civil and Local Police tackled the blaze which was apparently caused by an electrical short circuit. The apartment in which the fire originated was completely destroyed, the family who lived there losing everything they owned.
The occupants of the ten-storey building were allowed to return to their homes after several hours but the communal areas remained without lighting and the lifts were not working.
