Eight people died on Tuesday afternoon following a head-on collision between a lorry and a van on the A-7 in Alicante.
Three men, three women and two children died when the van in which they were travelling collided head-on with a lorry and burst into flames. The incident occurred at around 16:40 at km 543 in the municipality of Cox. The lorry driver suffered serious contusions and was taken to hospital in Orihuela. He was routinely tested for drugs and alcohol, both tests proving negative.
Both vehicles left the road after the collision and fell into a drainage ditch. The van was trapped between the lorry and the wall of the trench. The cause of the accident is as yet unknown.
