Taking a stroll along the main, central streets of Nerja and it becomes apparent that the proposed awnings to shade shoppers during the hot month of August have not yet been installed.
In February 2014, the Ministry of Commerce reported that, through a grant from the Junta de Andalucia, the streets of the Centro Comercial Abierto in Nerja, and other municipalities for that matter, would be shaded by awnings.
The final resolution was apparently adopted in April and approved on May 14th. The next stage was for the municipality to write the conditions for the procurement of tarpaulins, approve these conditions, award contracts, sign contracts, publish details etc etc…the usual red tape.
As a result, the awnings have not been installed by the deadline set by the Junta de Abdalucia, namely August 14th. The Junta de Andalucia, at the request of several municipalities, has now extended the deadline to September 30th or, if justified, to October 31st.
The Council will be informing local businesses of the shape, fabric to be used and placement method and installation is now expected to begin in the ‘second half of August’. So they should, hopefully, be finished in time for the cooler weather! The awnings are being designed to last for a period of fifteen years.
