The one hundred million euro new prison in Archidona, known as Málaga II and one of the most modern in Spain, will reportedly not open this year.
The new prison, costing over €100 million, covers 100,000 square metres and has the capacity to accommodate 2,000 inmates and is supposed to alleviate the strain on the provincial prison in Alhaurín de la Torre.
Apparently, the reason that the prison will not be opening is that it is not possible to determine the specific staffing needs for its implementation, something the current government appears to be blaming on the previous administration.
In addition, the government also reportedly said that such facilities impose a high burden on the public purse and construction of such should meet the needs demanded by a dwindling prison population.
Sounds like it may never open, yet another white elephant.
