In the first half hour of the first leg Spanish Super Cup, the mighty spenders looked as though they would run away with the tie against city rivals and La Liga winners Atlético, rarely losing possession of the ball.
But it was Atlético who managed the first shot on target as they showed their resilience and fought their way back into the game.
It wasn’t until the 80th minute that Real found the net, a scrambled goal from James Rodriguez, who had come on as a substitute for an injured Ronaldo. It was the Golden Boot winner’s first goal for the club since joining from Monaco.
But the lead didn’t last long as Atlético drew level through Garcia and now one would have to say that Atlético have the slight edge going in to the second leg on Friday.
