A forest fire which began at 16:00 in Cenes de la Vega, Granada, was finally extinguished at 21:00 on Sunday evening. According to early estimates, the blaze destroyed around 200 hectares of pine and scrub land.
A total of 21 aircraft, 12 fire engines, 230 firefighters and various other professional units were involved in tackling the blaze which broke out in two areas. The rugged terrain and often thick vegetation in the foothills of the Natural and National Parks of the Sierra Nevada did not make life easy for the firefighters.
The fire was controlled by late Friday night, stopping it from spreading even further, and on Sunday evening it was declared to be extinguished.
Investigators are now trying to determine the cause of the fire and the true extent of the damage caused.
