German Chancellor Angela Merkel was in Spain on Sunday for a two-day trip aimed at securing Spanish support for her unpopular European austerity policies.
In return, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy reportedly wants Angela Merkel’s help to get two of his officials placed in top European positions. Rajoy wants former agriculture minister Miguel Arias Cañete to receive a relevant economic portfolio, and current economy minister Luis de Guindos to head the Eurogroup.
Rajoy and Merkel apparently wandered a five kilometre stretch of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route on foot together on Sunday and later dined at a luxury restaurant in the Galician capital.
