It is more than two years since the ill-fated Tranvia tram system ground to a halt in Vélez-Málaga, but the mayor, Francisco Delgado Bonilla, still apparently wants to see it running again.
The Junta de Andalucia has, on numerous occasions, stated that it is unwilling to provide any funding for the tram system, but this has not deterred the mayor in his efforts to make them change their minds. On this occasion he is citing the fact that the running deficit – the difference between ticket price to travellers and the actual cost of a ticket – for the new Metro in Málaga is being financed jointly by the Junta de Andalucia (75%) and the Málaga City Council (25%).
Francisco Delgado Bonilla wants to see a similar system for the tram, with the Junta de Andalucia paying 75% and the Municipal Council 25% of the operating deficit.
There is, of course, the small matter of the rolling stock currently being in Sydney, Australia, not to mention the fact that the number of passengers using the system when it was in operation began way below expectations and just spiralled downhill from there.
