Pedro Moreno, aged 80 years, is set to enjoy sweet potato for quite some time after growing an 8 kilo 750 gram specimen on his allotment at El Playazo, Nerja.
Sweet potatoes have been grown in the Axarquia for 500 years since being introduced into Spain by Cristóbal Colón – Christopher Columbus – although production is in steady decline as many farmers have turned to avocados and custard apples.
An average sweet potato weighs between 300 and 500 grams.
