The Mayor of Tolox, Juan Vera, has announced his resignation after being sentenced to 15 months in prison and being banned from holding public office for ten years.
Juan Vera was convicted of urban planning violations involving 78 homes built on undeveloped land and has exhausted the appeals procedure.
Vera has been Mayor of Tolox since 2003 and maintains his innocence in the matter. However, he was also convicted of similar offences in 2012 and sentenced to one year in prison and eight years disqualification from public office. This case has not yet been finalised and is still pending.
The exact date of the resignation has not yet been set and it is also not yet known who will succeed Juan Vera as Mayor of Tolox.
