Strong competition from China and expanded EU quotas coming in from Romania and Bulgaria have seen half of the garlic farms in Andalucia being abandoned during the past three years.
Córdoba is one of the main producers of garlic in the region, but the farmers are suffering and planting less and less crop each year.
Currently, 46,000 tons of garlic are imported from China and 30,000 tons from Romania and Bulgaria. As more is imported, so prices plummet.
Agricultural organisations are asking the government to protect the Spanish garlic and for consumers to check the ñabel when they are making a purchase.
