Tourists heading to Venice, Italy, may need to budget for new baggage – thanks to a bizarre new rule instated by the city council. Visitors trundling wheelie suitcases will now be subject to a 500 euro fine.
The new rule comes into effect in May 2015, but there are exceptions. The rule does not apply to:
- Suitcases with silent, inflated tyres (which don’t exist at the moment)
- Residents of Venice
The city has already launched a campaign to discourage couples from attaching padlocks to the city’s bridges as a symbol of love on the grounds that the old structures are too fragile to cope with the weight. Some 20,000 ‘love locks’ were removed from the Rialto and Accademia bridges during the summer.
Surely no need to buy new suitcases, just carry them!
