Post Office workers have been asked to support a 24-hour strike today, Thursday, and join a protest march in Madrid to protest against the possible loss of 15,000 jobs during the next five years.
The unions say that around 8,000 jobs have been lost in the past three years due to early retirement, voluntary redundancy, transfers to other public bodies and amalgamation of positions, and that in the next five years another 15,000 jobs could go.
The unions believe that the total workforce could eventually be reduced to around 40,000 employees from a former total of 75,000. The current workforce is estimated at 55,000.
