It just never seems to stop. The Public prosecutor has asked the Guardia Civil to investigate the fate of €1.4 million of European grants to the Vejer de la Frontera Council for at least ten projects that were never executed.
Councillor Daniel Sanchez, PP, has stated that when the Partido Popular came to power after the elections of 2011 they found that the Council had not carried out at least ten projects for which European and other funds had been received. According to the Councillor, the municipality has had to return these funds.
According to Sanchez, the Council created a commission of inquiry and submitted the information and findings to the DPP.
Daniel Sanchez belives that this could be similar to what happened in Jerez de la Frontera where such funds were diverted to pay municipal running costs and the municipal payroll. That case resulted in the mayor, Pilar Sanchez, being sentenced to two years in prison.
According to the socialists, it is a common practice in many municipalities to use such funds to meet immediate expenses, such as running costs and payrolls.
