A marine waterspout – a tornado formed at sea – caused severe damage this morning near Málaga airport, Churriana, Playamar and Los Alamos.
The tornado reached up to 180 kph, which is intensity F1 on the Fujita-Pearson scale. Numerous trees were uprooted, roofs were blown off chiringuitos and warehouses, cars were damaged, two caravans were lifted in the air and moved about ten metres and various items of debris flew through the air at great speed.
The phenomenon began at 07:00 and was at its most severe for about ten minutes. Insurance companies are now analysing the multitude of claims already submitted relating to damage caused.
There were further waterspouts at various points, including one at Rincón de la Victoria, but these did not reach land and therefore did not cause damage.
