The Education Department of Nerja Council is putting into operation an initiative to try and reduce the amount of absenteeism in schools.
Analysis by Social Services apparently shows that truancy tends to begin at the age of 12 years and in order to combat this, the Council believes it is necessary to educate those in the lower grades, such as sixth grade Primary.
Although truancy can be influenced by family, school and social factors, this programme focuses on the school environment by motivating the students and making them aware of the importance of their education.
The programme is being developed with all final year students of Primary in all public schools in the municipalit, and is mainly mainly based on the organization of group meetings with a social educator, a psychologist and teacher.
