A man who jumped into the lion enclosure at Barcelona zoo is in a serious condition in the Vall d’Hebron Hospital.
Justo José M. P., a Spanish national aged around 45 years, has staged a number of off-beat one-man protests in Barcelona. On this occasion he was dressed in military uniform and climbed the railings before scaling the wall down to the lion enclosure. The lions then bit and scratched him as they tried to drag him away.
Firefighters, zoo keepers and Local Police used hoses to try and keep the lions at bay while they rescued the man.
Justo José M.P is a local police officer from the town of Gelida in Barcelona province who is currently, and probably fortunately for the public, on leave. His backpack reportedly contained a banner he was intending to unfurl inside the animal enclosure.
