Twenty people have been arrested in Girona and Almeria as suspected members of an organisation exporting contaminated horticultural products to Russia through a company based in Estonia.
The investigation began after the Russian authorities complained that shipments from Spanish companies were intercepted at the border because they were contaminated.
The import and export company in Estonia listed a number of companies in Almeria, Valencia and Murcia as the source of the products. However, these Spanish companies were being used without their consent on falsified national and international documents.
It was a company and organisation in Girona which was allegedly falsifying the necessary documentation and certificates to allow exports to third countries.
The Spanish authorities have requested that charges be brought against four Estonian nationals.
