The mayor of Nerja, Rosa Arrabal Téllez, read out s short speech prepared by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces and the event was attended by several politicians as well as a number of local residents.
There were complaints in some quarters that only a few people turned up for the gathering, as well as accusations made on social media that the people of Nerja obviously didn’t care about what had happened. It was pointed out that similar atrocities could occur anywhere, even on a crowded beach or restaurant in Nerja.
However, a large number of people responded by saying that they were simply unaware that the event was being held, and if they had in fact known then they would have turned up.
The municipal website carried a piece stating that the gathering HAD taken place, but nothing to say it WOULD BE taking place.
Communication was obviously somewhat lacking, as it very often has been over the past few years. Emails to media outlets, a few hastily-made posters, radio announcement, leaflets or even a van going round with a loudspeaker blaring would have certainly helped. Not everyone sits permanently glued to Whatsapp, which was allegedly how it was organised.
Bill Jones says:
I don’t doubt, for one second, that the meeting, would have been extremely well attended, had it been properly advertised.
We all know what it’s like, in Nerja!
Details of anything, are kept close to the chest of the organisers and you find out it is happening, two days ago.
The accusations are disgusting.
Get a grip Nerja and advertise events, well before they are going to happen.
Ruth Woodhouse says:
Agree, Bill Jones. We would certainly have attended, had we known. It is appalling to suggest that people don’t care.
Bill Jones says:
Absolutely, Ruth!!!!
