The Nerja Diving Centre has requested that Nerja Council consider the installation of an underwater ‘museum’ in the Nerja coast. The initiative it is said, would be a popular tourist attraction for Nerja and an environmental benefit, to regenerate the sea floor and encourage marine life. As explained by the developers: “for both tourism professionals and politicians firmly committed to the protection, restoration and enhancement of the marine reserve of Maro-Cerro Gordo, and its promotion as the main claim of eco-tourism, would place Nerja and Maro in a privileged position that would ensure the future of tourism in the town, providing stability of employment and wealth “. The proposals include the placement of artificial reefs to promote marine life. It is claimed that tourism will benefit in Nerja as more divers would be keen to explore the seabeds locally.
