Nerja Town Hall has informed the family who own the private land on Papagayo Beach in Calahonda, that they now require their building to be demolished, due to the numerous problems of cleaning and settlements within this private plot.
Given the owner’s negligence of his property, the municipality of Nerja was forced to carry out cleaning work on more than one occasion causing many neighborhood complaints.
As the deterioration affects the image of the entire area, the council were obliged to take more drastic measures
Many more will appreciate this beauty spot as it returns to its unspoilt glory with its stunning beach and beautiful coves, just a stones throw away from the Balcon de Europa.
Philip Holmes says:
Calahonda beach was the best in Nerja. And has deteriorated so much and clearly used for rough sleeping.
The Junta has responsibility for insisting on the Papagoyos Restaurant closure. The council should have demolished the unwanted building for tourist benefit.
Kathryn Jeffree says:
this is a beautiful beach which is becoming spoilt by the settlers and their disgusting habits and unruly animals. Please Nerja council restore it to its former beauty by removing the building and its inhabitants
Kathryn Jeffree says:
Sooner the better this is demolished once a lovely bar, it has now been invaded by settlers and their disgusting habits together with their unruly animals. A beautiful beach which needs to be restored to its former glory.
Rosemarie Earwicker says:
Another nail in its coffin, this the last year I will be coming to Nerja all the character has been knocked out of it by city fathers. And I have been coming here for the last 20 years .
Kath says:
Is it the family of owners who are at fault here, or the Town Hall? Surely the Town Hall could foresee, the same as the rest of us, that the unsavoury characters who hang around this town would pull it apart, use it for shelter and fill the area with human and animal excrement? Wasn’t it previously reported that the owner of Papagayo was unfairly treated by the Town Hall?
|Dorita says:
You are correct, the owner of the bar was treated shamefully by the ‘powers that be’; who after taking taken 6 months rent from him announced that he had to close his business.
I too, as Rosemarie above has stated am becoming disolutioned with Nerja and all the filth and ne’er do wells. I have been holidaying in Nerja since 1987, two sometimes three times yearly. After my two months this year, I think it will be adios.
Howard says:
I feel the local police have been very soft on the vagrants and beggars that litter the centre of the commercial tourist areas for many years and it never seems to get any better, they seem to be perfectly able to get rid of the musicians, artists and entertainers that used to add greatly to the atmosphere in that area, but fail completely to do the same to the bums and beggars that really spoil it.
graham ash says:
absolutely true.the same can be said of prolongacion hernando de carabeo, where groups of drunks and bums gather and infest the beach below with their filth. The new Mayor should take heed of these letters,if tourism falls off what is left for the town.
Roger says:
Those drunks in prolongacion de Carabeo who spoil the beautiful view from the plaza across the bay, use the bin storage area across the road as their toilet. The stink is horrendous and getting worse as the weather gets hotter. It is a health hazard and the area needs to be cleared and fumigated. Tourists are giving the plaza a wide berth, and avoiding having to dump their rubbish.
pedro says:
Yes the situation has become a lot worse in the last year or so. It will only get worse as the ayuntamientos failure to do anything will only atract more of the vagrants as Nerja will be seen as a soft touch.
Calahonda beach should be the best beach in Nerja as it’s the one most often viewed from the balcon. It is now virtually a no go zone.
John says:
There is currently a man in Calle Carabeo with a dog and two suckling puppies. So many people are giving him money, both Spanish and tourists. It is obviously beneficial to beg in Nerja.
debs says:
So sad to hear this. Have seen other places clean up their act and so maybe this is a knock on effect. Have been coming to nerja for 10 years. Love it to bits to the extent of contemplng a permanent move. But noticed a change last year in some places so don’t feel as safe sometimes as i used to. Will see this summer
Jo says:
Earlier this week there was a massive clearing and clean up the Papagayo restaurant. The council workers worked their socks off to carry out this work whilst escorted by 4 Guarda Civil officers.
I thought to myself that this work was precursor to the demolition work. 3/4 days later nothing and the vagrants are still hanging about the area and night time activities still goes on. So at this stage the council has had good clean up for these people for which I’m sure they will be very thankful. We have been watching the deterioration this beach for nearly 2 years now and the good people of Nerja deserve better. We will return in September but I doubt if the situation will have changed, it is very sad.
Sandra Ash says:
I agree with all the previous message, but what are the authorities going to do about it,the amount of money that visitors bring in yearly surely should mean that the council if they care must clean up areas of Nerja, the dreadful smells from certain areas caused by tramps (and that’s what they are) is quite disgusting, makes one think of going elsewhere after 23 years.so sad.
Migo says:
The El Papagayos closedown is soo sad..
So very sad 🙁
Ron says:
We had a house in Nerja for 18 years, it has now been sold. We too have seen the deteriation in some places especially that shamble on Calahonda beach. Nerja is not the same anymore-very sad.
Alison says:
Well it was an hour or two before sunset today when we ventured down the cobbled path to Papagayo, it really is a beautiful little beach; What got my goat was the four men sat on the wall at the top of the main path to the beach after leaving the tunnel from the balcony area. These four men were very unkept and scruffy drinking from litre bottles of beer. I would like to think that these people are harmless but where they were positioned was quite intimidating, we chose to not spend much time on the beach, the men said something loudly as we walked back up to the Balcony and then gave us a dirty look. Only seconds away it is the picture of conveviality cafe society and a beautiful ice cream shop just opposite this path. I don’t know what the answer is but feel something should be done, this part of the tourist area that makes nerja what it is? The Papagayo building looks very derelict now they should fix that shurely it will only worsen with weathering. I think they should have some tourist police here to move these people on, if they are in the corner of some park or other place where there is a police presence then that’s one thing but sitting bold as brass in a group drinking and being obnoxious at the only(and it is the only one as all the other passes are closed due to the weathering and danger of the rocks)pass to the beach, it’s a disgrace to the town of Nerja and visiting tourists; I hope the council will invest in securing these places and curbing people from congregating in a threatening manner like this.
