Several busineses have complained about cockroaches and the massive rats that come out of the sewage, especially near the centre of town, where most restaurants and stores are. Nerja Business Association has asked the city council for an immediate disinfection since it is affecting tourism in the area. Other civilians have joined the petition and suggest the involvement of Narixa Waters to clean the sewers
Cockroaches are winged insects that are found in nearly every corner of the globe, however, some species have been drawn to human habitats for one reason or another and are considered pests since they can spread illnesses. Among the 4000 species of cockroaches only 35 species are ever reported to be living near people or interfering in our lives. Most of them prefer to live where its moist and warm, and especially is it common to find them near water as this is their basic need. Therefore it its no surprise that that they will move into a building uninvited, if given half the chance.
Although it seems that we have a natural dislike of cockroaches, it is not uncommon for some people to own them as pets! Yet many prefer to entertain a gecko or two, which are natural predators of Cockroaches!

Wish they would also clean up the beaches while there in June the sewage in the sea was unbelievable and we could not swim in the water for a number of days. This has been escalating over the years and really needs to be addressed. Also the derelict Parrot Restaurant does not add to the vista and attracts the wrong people.

According to people on Trip Advisor, the businessmen and residents are lying and there is no problem. Perhaps we can get to the truth here?

Lets hope the council in Nerja is going to act quickly.
I know these little pests have got out of hand but its probably mans fault in the first place with the small drain issues etc.
Nerja is such a wonderful place and does attract many folk.

I love Nerja, we’ve been coming here for years, but they are very slow to improve things. We too were disappointed with the sea in June, but at least didn’t see any cockroaches! I don’t bother with Trip Advisor as there is a clique on there who never accept any criticism of Nerja – without the truth how will things ever improve?
