About 4am this morning SMART project detectors recorded a very bright fireball over the skies of the province of Malaga. The fireball rose rapidly in the early morning heading north and reached a final altitude of about 38 kilometers above the Mediterranean sea.
The phenomenon occurred because of the disintegration of a comet fragment and its impact with the atmosphere at a speed of more than 80,000 miles per hour. This spectacular fireball is one of many that have been noted in recent months in similar areas.
This event has been recorded by the detection stations under the project called SMART. The purpose of the project is to continuously monitor the skies and to record and study the impact from different objects in the solar system in the Earth’s atmosphere.
