Panic was widespread after reports were made to lifeguards at a Fuengirola beach on three separate occasions, that a shark was seen in the waters near the shore. It is now uncertain if the reports were from different members of the same family. The shark was allegedly spotted yards from Fuengirola beach, which was then closed for around five hours whilst a thorough search was made in the water. It is thought that the shark may have been a baby blue shark. Lifeguards decided to organize an evacuation of the beach with help from the local police but only as a safety precaution. No one was injured and there was no encounter with the shark itself. Lifeguards were concerned that there may have been possibly other sharks nearby.
The are approximately 46 types of shark which can be found in the Mediterranean sea, yet attacks are extremely rare. A blue shark was spotted last summer and filmed by shocked onlookers in Fuengirola’s shallow waters.
