With low temperatures around the province of Malaga and snow expected at altitudes of 500 metres and above, the Malaga Met. office forecasted yesterday to be the coldest day so far this winter on the Costas. How accurate was their forecast? On Wednesday the weather centre at Malaga airport registered 7 degrees and higher inland temperatures fell dramatically as the day progressed to freezing lows, however, Nerja ended the day between 4 – 6 degrees on the coast with an icy wind chill factor making it feel much lower. Nerja has certailnly woken up this morning with the beautiful snow-capped mountains in full view.
Other areas such as Antequera, where a yellow weather warning for low temperatures was given, saw temperatures fall to -2ºC in the early hours and then reaching 2ºC at 9am. Snow is still expected in a few places above sea level including the popular nature reserve in Torcal.
Tourists and residents in Nerja have been enjoying full days of sunshine up until today, with temperatures ranging between 14-16 ºC feeling much warmer in a suntrap.
With weather warnings temporarily still in place for Malaga province, It is hoped that this cold snap may subside quickly and that warmer temperatures may return this weekend. Apparently, there is some good news for all visitors to Nerja looking forward to somewhat warmer weather. The forecast predicts, that after a few more rainy days and cold temperatures on the coast, things should begin to pick back up to temperatures between 13-16 ºC and possibly even reaching 17ºC. Exactly the right prescription needed to beat those winter blues.
