The new holiday rentals regulations came in to force ten months ago and since then 11,000 properties have been registered already, providing accommodation that can cater for 54,152 tourists.
There are currently over 79,000 hotel places available in the province and tourism authorities say that by September, the number of people renting accommodation may well be higher than those staying in hotels.
Holiday rental properties in Mijas already exceed the number of hotel places by 437 percent and and Nerja by 252 percent. In contrast, more touristy areas such as Torremolinos, seem to cater more for hotel stays. The new figures on the holiday rental sector reveal that this has not impacted entirely on hotel stays in general and that numbers of occupants in hotels remain high too at particular times of the week and month.
As the popularity of the Costa del Sol & Malaga increases attracting more and more investors, many are seeing the benefits of investing in property here to let out to tourists. Interestingly, it is estimated that the owners of 3,000 villas or apartments in the area do not live in Spain.
It seems that there are benefits for tourists with each type of accommodation, hotels and private rentals and there are definitely tourists that enjoy both.
