Latest warning – Beware of the 2 Euros coin scam in Nerja

If you are visiting Nerja in December, the authorities may well save you from being ‘short changed’. The Civil Guard has once again returned to using social networks to warn of a new scam. On this occasion, we they have advised when receiving coins to pay special attention to the two-euro coins that are being handed over to us, since during the last few days at least five South African rand coins have been identified circulating as two euros locally. The problem is that this money from South Africa is really worth 30 cents with the current exchange rates, and you’ll probably be stuck with them.

To warn of this scam, La Guardia Civil has written the following message on Twitter: This is a 5 South African rand coin. It is very similar to the 2 euros but really worth € 0.30. Do not accept it!”

One customer who received South African currency instead of a two euros coin said ” I was given a 5 RAND coin in change somewhere but didn’t notice at the time that it was not Euro currency as the 5 Rand coin looks extremely similar to the €2 coin (same colour, & size etc). I presume I was given this in change and it was easily missed.”
He continued “A few of my friends have also been given the coin in change and weren’t aware of it until they later tried to use it for themselves”
