A warning by the Spanish board of health suggests that there is a “high risk” of a cockroach plague affecting all regions of the country this summer.
Heavy springtime rainfall paired with rising temperatures is believed to be a catalyst in driving cockroaches from the campo to urban areas.
The board of health goes on to say that not only are cockroaches a hygiene worry but they pose a threat to food supplies and could cause salmonella.
To make matters worse there are reports of an American ‘super cockroach’ species that have arrived in Spain from boats crossing the Atlantic.
Preventive measures include shutting off water supplies and removing food from areas where cockroaches are present together with sealing cracks and crevices.
If you discover infestations in your home, you are advised to call a pest control company who will eradicate the problem.
