New discovery in Nerja caves

The Cueva de Nerja Foundation has reported one of the most notable archaeological discoveries that have occurred in the Nerja caves in recent years.

Members of the Research Institute of the Cueva de Nerja led by Dr. Cristina Liñán discovered funeral remains

believed to date back to the end of the Neolithic and the beginning of the Copper Age.

The skull was found in an incredibly good condition measuring 40 centimetres high with a mouth dimension of between 8 and 10 centimetres. The remains were uncovered buried in a cavity and covered with a rock slab similar to practices used during Roman times.

What is amazing about the find is that it was located in a cavity known as the Sala del Cataclismo, a part of the caves that have been open to the public for over 60 years.

The discovery fits in perfectly with what is known about the history of the caves confirming that they were used by prehistoric societies for burial rites.
