Not many cities in the world can boast about being able to show their visitors a Roman theatre, never mind one that sits next to a fortress built by the Moors.
The Roman theatre in Malaga hasn’t undergone any work since the information centre was created 20 years ago, but that’s about to change after the Junta de Andalucía’s Ministry of Culture gave the green light to a project the regional government proposed to restore the orchestra and the front of the stage.
Professor of Archaeology at Malaga university Pedro Rodríguez Oliva knows the theatre well and says that the ‘orchestra’ was originally covered in marble but has deteriorated since the marble was taken away and used to make lime.
“The work which has been carried out so far by the Junta at the Roman theatre has been very respectful of the monument, so I imagine that this will be too,” says Rodríguez Oliva.
The Roman Theatre in Malaga is believed to date back to the first century during the rule of Emperor Augustus.
