A hat-trick from Lionel Messi and one from Piqué saw Barcelona comfortably past Dutch side Ajax in their first match of the new Champions League campaign. Messi took his Champions League tally to 62 goals.

Ideal start for Real Madrid in the Champions League

Three for Ronaldo, two for Benzema and one for Isco gave Real Madrid an ideal start in the new Champions League season as they ran out 1-6 winners at Galatasaray. Ronaldo is now the fourth-highest scorer in Champions League history with 53 goals behind Ruud van Nistelrooy with 56, Lionel Messi with 59 and Raul on 71.

It was a Spanish 1-2-3 once again, this time at the San Marino MotoGP, as reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo took victory ahead of compatriots Marc Marquez and Dabi Pedrosa.

Positive dope tests for Spanish athletes

Three Spanish athletes have tested positive in doping tests carried out at the Spain Athletics Championships held in Madrid in July. The tests were the first to be independently carried out by the Spanish Agency for the Protection of Health and Fight Against Doping (AEPSAD) as part of changes to toughen up anti-doping measures in Spain.

The world’s most expensive player, like his predecessor and team-mate, scored on his debut for Real Madrid, although it took Gareth Bale three minutes longer to find the net than was the case with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Barcelona still leading the way

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick as Barcelona beat Valencia 3-2 at the weekend to stay top of La Liga, Postiga replying for Valencia. All the goals came in the first half of the match.

Lorenzo wins at Silverstone

It was a Spanish 1-2-3 again as world champion Jorge Lorenzo ended Marc Marquez’s winning streak to take victory at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The lead swapped three times on the last lasp as Marquez made his move but Lorenzo held on for the win.

First trophy of the season for Barcelona

Barcelona won a record 11th Spanish Super Cup on away goals as they drew 0-0 with Atletico Madrid, with an out of sorts Lionel Messi uncharacteristically failing to convert from the penalty spot in the 89th minute. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw.

Adriano scored the only goal of the game as Barcelona maintained a 100% winning start to the season with a 1-0 win over Málaga, who’s start has been exactly the opposite.
