Residents of a four-storey apartment block in the centre of Vélez-Málaga were startled on Tuesday afternoon when the building suffered a direct lightning strike via the television antenna. Although there were no injuries and the structure was not damaged, the interior showed visible signs of the strike.
New Social Services building
Vélez-Málaga Council is set to launch the tender process for a new €1.4 million Social Services office complex during the month of April, the project currently having a completion period of eighteen months.

Two people were injured in the early hours of Sunday morning in calle Zamora in Vélez Málaga during a knife fight.
Thieves target entire urbanisation in Almayate
A woman walking her dogs on the beach in Almayate, Vélez-Málaga, raised the alarm after noticing something not quite right at a beachfront urbanisation of apartments used as second homes. It turned out that all the apartments in the urbanisation, some thirty properties, had been robbed.
Police close illegal bingo hall
Police have closed down an illegal bingo operation in Torre del Mar being carried out in a bar in the town. The bar had been sanction last November for carrying out similar gambling activities and so this time police seized all the equipment being used, such as TV’s, DVD’s, bingo cards, pens, prize tokens and €350 in cash.
New training courses for young people
Vélez-Málaga Council has launched a training scheme with 942 places aimed at people aged between 18 years and 35 years to improve the qualifications of young people seeking employment.
Repainting road markings
Vélez-Málaga Council has started a project to repaint road markings in the municipality and renew and replace street furniture, rubbish bins and other items. The project has an investment of €184,910.42 and is being funded, naturally, through the Programme for the Promotion of Agricultural Employment (PROFEA).
Artisan Market and Gastronomy Fair
On March 3rd, the Paseo de Larios in Torre del Mar is home to the second Málaga Goat Cheese and Wine Market organised by the collective Axarquía Me Gusta. Also, running in parallel, running from now until March 3rd, is the II Gastronomic Festival of the Suckling Goat in collaboration with the Málaga Association of Goat Breeders.
Council proposing to set up a Municipal Employment Plan
Vélez-Málaga Council is proposing a Municipal Employment Plan aimed at promoting access to the labour market of around 450 veleños.
Certificate of Appreciation awarded to Oscar Medina
The Association for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion in Vélez-Málaga, an organisation dedicated to the distribution of food to needy families, has awarded the president of the Commonwealth of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol-Axarquia (Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol-Axarquía), Oscar Medina, a Certificate of Appreciation for his selfless work with the group.
